Saffron Walden carers create award-winning festive wreath

21st December 2018

The Saffron Walden branch of Manorcourt Homecare has been announced as the winners of a fun Christmas Wreath Competition, which invited all residential homes and homecare branches in the Healthcare Homes Group to join in.

The staff at the Essex branch took compliments and warm words of thanks from its service users to decorate their winning wreath. The competition, which was open to 37 care homes and 14 homecare branches in total, was independently judged by the group’s senior leadership team, with the ultimate first place winners receiving prizes up to the value of £500.

All homecare branches and care homes were challenged with creating festive wreaths with their residents or service users as part of an annual competition.

Rea Bambridge, a care coordinator from the Saffron Walden office came up with the idea of making their own baubles to hang off their wreath, sending one to every service user and carer, inviting them to write a Christmas message to be displayed.

The messages included Merry Christmas wishes, along with compliments and thanks for the care delivered by the team throughout the year. So many were received that they couldn’t all fit on the wreath, so were also used on the office Christmas tree.

The wreath was completed with two ‘carer angels’ hanging in the centre, wearing clothes which match the team’s own uniforms.

The homecare team at Saffron Walden won first place, and was closely followed by Ashley Gardens care home in Maidstone, which won £400 of gifts, and Blandford Grange in Blandford Forum, Dorset, which scooped £300 prize as the third place entry. A number of ‘highly commended’ prizes of £100 were also given to Barking Hall Nursing Home in Suffolk, Avon Lodge in Bristol and Apex in Colchester.

Talking about their winning entry, Branch Manager Emily Ranoble said, “We’re delighted to have won this competition, which was such a lovely way for us to come together for some festive fun.

“We wanted to involve our service users and we had such a fantastic response. The messages we received on the baubles were absolutely lovely. Reading them all was very touching and provided wonderful feedback to our staff who work so very hard, all year, and especially over Christmas. I’d like to also extend a special mention of thanks to Rea Bambridge who came up with the creative ideas for this project.”

Helen Gidlow, Chief Operating Officer of the Healthcare Homes Group added: “Congratulations to all the homes and homecare branches that entered the annual Group-wide competition. The thought that had gone into all was fantastic – and the involvement of our residents and service users was great to see too. It was a lovely way to kick-start our Christmas festivities and I’d like to extend my congratulations to the teams at Saffron Walden, Ashley Gardens and Blandford Grange for producing some beautiful creations.”
